Diversity
Tanzanian culture is wonderful diverse mix of over 120 tribes throughout the country. There are over 120 languages spoken throughout Tanzania, however, Swahili is the official language. Having such rich and varied customs between tribes has allowed for some unique cultural aspects to appear. The music industry takes influences from old traditions and new styles. The Sukuma tribe is by far the largest majority in Tanzania. The other largest tribes are the Nyamwezi, Chagga, and Shirazi. Despite occasional occurrences, all the tribes coexist peacfully. http://tanzaniaembassy-us.org/?page_id=100 |

History
Tanzania began as a union of the much larger mainland territory of Tanganyika and the coastal archipelago of Zanzibar. Both territories were controlled by various European powers before declaring independence in the mid 20th century. Tanganyika began as a colony in German East Africa, until 1919 when it was declared a British mandate by the League of Nations. Under British rule, it served as a military outpost during WWII and was then made a United Nations Trust Territory in 1947. Tanganyika gained independence in 1961. Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere united the territories in 1964 and became the first president of Tanzania. http://tanzaniaembassy-us.org/?page_id=92 |

The People of Tanzania
Religion
The religious groups of Tanzania are divided up very evenly. Though statistics are difficult to obtain; it's estimated 30% are Christians, 35% are Muslims, and 35% still follow their indigenous beliefs. Despite their being such large numbers of each group, violence is a rarity when they conflict with each other. The religious tolerance is one of the many reasons Tanzania is such a safe country. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/tz.html |
