The Music of Djibouti
The geography of Djibouti makes it an interesting melting pot of many cultures, which manifests in the music. Because of the northeastern location on the continent of Africa, mixes of the traditional Somali and Afar cultures, Arab influences from the north, and French influences from the colonial government creates a rich and unique culture in the tiny desert island (Culture Overview, 2002). The variation in regions creates a beautiful mix of diversity in the country. The influences of many dominant cultures have shaped the development of rich traditions within Djibouti.
